I use vdr with a dxr3 card (the signal comes from a nova-t) and it randomly crashes. The syslog shows no particular trouble. Only the dxr3 hardware (or the driver) seems to be faulty, as I get a still image on the tv just after the lockup.
Is there a way to stop the tv playback, during recordings, in order to improve stability ?

I wrote the patch with the softdevice plugin in mind, but it has been reported to work on the dxr3. Note that the dxr3 will not blank the screen when the MPEG stream is suspended.
If you do not want to install this patch, try the following: start playing back a recording, and hit Pause. There is also a "suspendoutput" plugin that works roughly like that.
