I know this is FAQ, but unfortunately I cannot find any decent answers. So here we go:
Which versions of vdr, em8300, vdr-dxr3 and should I select? I want OSD menus, so CVS version of dxr3 plugin is not sufficient.
- I've searched with google - tried reading mailing list archives http://www.linuxtv.org/pipermail/vdr/ - Checked http://www.linuxtv.org/vdrwiki/index.php/Dxr3-plugin - I know http://cachalot.mine.nu/src/dxr3/ but don't know really are those with OSD or not, filenames says 'cvs something'
IMHO, http://www.linuxtv.org/vdrwiki/index.php/Dxr3-plugin would be right place to answer this question.

D'oh, the dir had a few README files, but Apache was "smart" enough to hide them from the listing. Fixed now. Anyway, see http://cachalot.mine.nu/src/dxr3/vdr-dxr3.README

Fine work, thanks! However, you don't mentition compatible vdr version. I suppose you know at least one VDR version your packages compile & work, right? :-)

Ok, maybe direct answer is too much to ask, but some brief summary of working combinations and known problems might not be too much to ask? Something like:
- dxr3-0.2.3-preX works/compiles with vdr 1.X.Z-1.X.Y - with dxr3-0.2.3-preX feature Y does not work
Unfortunately I don't know enough to add such things. Writing down my knowledge would result something like 'DXR3 has problems with everything, and setting it up can be painful'. Well, maybe not that bad, but something like that is impression you get when reading mailing list...
I at least put there that 'no OSD' issue.

The most glaring DXR3 plugin problems I'm aware of are: - OSD turns pink after returning from the MPlayer plugin (or hitting "reset DXR3 hardware" in the OSD menu) - No sound with the MP3 or DVD plugins with VDR >= 1.3.18 - Crashes at VDR exit (somewhat cosmetic) - Sometimes A/V sync problems, in particular with the MTV3 channel here
I have a small pile of patches I haven't been able to test yet (hi Luca!) which may or may not improve some of the above. And more patches are always welcome...

But what are these messages like '[PATCH] dxr3 for vdr-1.3.22' At least I get impression 1.3.22 does not work without patching, and for me 1.3.22 appears bigger than 1.3.13 :-)
Unfortunately http://www.linuxtv.org/pipermail/vdr/ has no archive for start of that thread. Are there some place where older messages can be found? For some reason archives before 2005-02-13 are missing?

'fully thread patched'?
What about putting your whole vdr-tree available? I have feeling there has been patches for nearly every plugin, and finding those patches without maling list archives is hopeless.
The most glaring DXR3 plugin problems I'm aware of are:
- No sound with the MP3 or DVD plugins with VDR >= 1.3.18
This is fatal for me. Hmm, using soundcard output should fix that?

There was a site I can't find anymore that had some kind of a timing patch for the plugin (also a patch called "braindeadtv" that made everything come out in 16:9 for those not lucky enough to have an adv7170) and I really didn't see it fixing anything either. Maybe I misunderstood the concept or something.
Doesn't anyone else get this or is it thought of as a minor irritation not worth mentioning?
- The OSD support is not as complete as on a full feature dvb card. There are ~always glitches. Teletext for example shows most pages with parts transparent where they shouldn't be etc. And you can just forget about using plugins like osdpip or osdimage.

With live tv it works ok for me (I don't remember what settings I have, though), but when watching recordings, the text appears usually several seconds too early (been too lazy to report this earlier, sorry...).
On the subject of subtitles, I've noticed that, at least with movies from TV2 in Finland, the subtitles appear about 0.4-1 seconds too early (I have to shift it before putting it to DVD). For some reason, this is not needed with the 30-minute Maxwell Smart episodes, though...
Timo
My setup is the following: HW: Hauppauge Nexus S ff-card, Hauppauge WinTV Nova T and Hollywood+ card SW: Fedora Core 1, DVB drivers v1.1.1, VDR v1.3.21 and following patched versions from http://cachalot.mine.nu/src/dxr3/: em8300-20041117-patched and vdr-dxr3-0.2.3-pre3-cvs20040913-patched. I do also have ffmpeg-0.4.9-pre1 and MPlayer-1.0pre6a installed.
Everything works fine with VDR+DXR3 plugin when I don't have the Nexus S ff card installed, but after I install the card I don't get any audio (analog or digital) out of DXR3. I either don't get any audio from Hauppauge's audio out. However when I play a video file with mplayer through DXR3 I get the audio correctly.
So there is something wrong with the VDR & DXR3 plugin & FF card. Do you have any suggestions what to try? I use DXR3 to get S-video out from my system to get the better picture quality.

The same happens with teletext subtitles. In fact I posted a patch to delay them.

What the subject says? :) Coincidentally, that particular patch was included in my "patched" tarball even before 1.3.22 was out.
At least I get impression 1.3.22 does not work without patching, and for me 1.3.22 appears bigger than 1.3.13 :-)
Notice "or later" in the description. In other words: it won't work with VDR < 1.3.13, but as far as I know, it does work with VDR >= 1.3.13, with the caveats discussed here.
I'm using "fully thread patched" 1.3.17 myself, and have tested the plugin briefly at least up to VDR 1.3.21 (but see below).
'fully thread patched'?
There were loads of threading related patches posted to this list at 1.3.17 time; I've applied all of them.

It's already there. All the stuff I use is RPM'd for Fedora Core 3 at http://cachalot.mine.nu/3/ (I do not have any kind of "tree" besides this, nor do I have time or plans to provide one.)

Me too, that's why I stick with 1.3.17.
Hmm, using soundcard output should fix that?
Unless I'm mistaken, that's not possible with the DVD plugin.

For me, the latter, at least in the list of "most glaring problems". Mileages vary, of course.

I should have mentioned (for those who won't read the rpm changelogs) that in addition to other contributors, the vdr packages in the above owe a lot to Darren Salt's excellent work for Debian. Unless you're familiar with rpm, you might find his tarballs at http://zap.tartarus.org/~ds/debian/dists/unstable/main/source/misc/ more accessible.

I was looking for tarball containing whole directory contaning vdr and all plugins under PLUGINS/src. I suppose I can get it from those SRPM's with decent amount of work. Let's see when I have time.

You can extract RPMs manually to the current dir with command: rpm2cpio some.i586.rpm | cpio -i

Right. I put together a little patch for em8300 if anyone else stuck with a 7175 likes to give it a try. This one only works for pal but adding ntsc support would be very simple. My tv can't eat ntsc so I can't really test what the numbers (480, 520, 31, 238 maybe?) for em8300_dicom.c could be.
On that note the ENCODER_MODE_WIDE43 and EM8300_VIDEOMODE_WIDE43 should probably be called ENCODER_MODE_PAL_WIDE43 and EM8300_VIDEOMODE_PAL_WIDE43 respectively but I left it untouched so that the dxr3 patch from that site works without modification.
Also doesn't anyone else think the driver throws out a crap load of useless printks all the time? Why would the casual user care if there's for example a "FIFO sync timeout"? After a day or two my dmesg is full of this kind of nonsense, making it harder to spot some potentially more interesting messages. Another trivial patch attached for anyone who cares.

Nearly works. MP3 plugin works if I press 3s forward on beginning of every track. Without that press player is jammed on beginning of each track forever.

MP3 plugin seem unusable with my setup:
- With DXR3 audio out needs that 3s forward press for every track - With OSS audio output no volume control available, or have I missed some part of setup?
And to finalize unusability, vdr stops working after 5-300 minutes with mp3 plugin. At some point there comes silence, and remote does not do anything. Don't really know what is problem, but VDR seems to be dead. And this happens only with mp3 plugin.
I am using: vdr-1.3.22 vdr-mp3-0.9.11 em8300-0.15.0-cvs20050308-patched-20050307 (From cachalot.mine.nu ) vdr-dxr3-0.2.3-pre3-cvs20040913-patched-2005030 (From cachalot.mine.nu )
Anybody having properly working vdr-1.3.23 + dxr3 + vdr-mp3? Switching to 1.3.23 would be nice since there is timer date-format fixed.

With vdr-1.3.23, the cvs vdr-dxr3-stable branch and this patch (didn't check if it's been applied in cvs) I don't see this. Cannot comment on the other issues since I just installed the mp3 plugin for testing.

Correct, I think most (err, most are using DVB, but anyways) people have the soundcard connected to their amplifier and use the volumen control there.

Sorry, I can only comment on MP3 plugin on DVB and in this case I can play hours of music without any problem.

Oops, I seem to have missed this mail, but... wow, great! Works for me, no April fools here :). I have applied it to the vdr-dxr3-0-2 branch in CVS. Thanks a bunch!
BTW, note that the "vdr-dxr3-stable" branch in CVS was a temporary name; it has been renamed to "vdr-dxr3-0-2".
