Hi Klaus, really a great work!!
Something I realized: I'm recording the Simpsons on "Pro Sieben" as a repeating Timer. The Simpsons do not have a subtitle, so in the Recordings-Menu I see a subfolder "The Simpsons" but inside the Folder there are only the Times and Dates of the recording, because there is no subtitle... Would it be possible that if a recording in a episode-folder dores not have a subtitle, the episode-name would be displayed?

And where should that episode name come from? That's what's typically in the "short text" (or "subtitle", as you named it - but I try to avoid that word here, because it collides with actual _subtitles_, i.e. written text of the spoken words on screen, possibly in a different language).

@Klaus: The episode-name then should be the program-name. So no empty episode-names appear. I think this is better than a directory with recordings without a name :)
@Udo:
You can get this by using the timer name "The Simpsons~The Simpsons", however you have to disable the use-episode-name option, or VDR will again record to another sub-folder.
Sure i could do that, but for me that's a kind of work-around... It would be great if there is no episode-name, VDR would display the program-name

I assume you meant episode name and program title, not subtitle and episode-name, eg. if there is no episode name, just call the recording "The Simpsons", not "".

To get the use-episode-name feature for /some/ timers, add ~EPISODE to the timer names, and they will record just like with use-episode-name enabled. You can also add ~TITLE to get the EPG program title.

Udo

I think it is better then in such a case vdr generates his own "short text" with a fix prefix like "Episode" or "Folge" and a two or three Digit-Number. So you get a directory called "The Simpsons" and in that directory all recordings called "Episode 001","Episode 002","Episode 003",....
Is it possible make this changes in vdr?

This would be Possible, but you would have to generate the short-text when creating the recording. I've made a little patch to VDR 1.3.44. See the attachment.
@Klaus: what do you think about it? :)

@Klaus: what do you think about it? :)
So then you'll get a Recordings menu like
--------------------------------------------- The Simpsons
08.01.06 20:00 The Simpsons 09.01.06 20:00 The Simpsons 10.01.06 20:00 The Simpsons 11.01.06 20:00 The Simpsons 12.01.06 20:00 The Simpsons 13.01.06 20:00 The Simpsons 14.01.06 20:00 The Simpsons 15.01.06 20:00 The Simpsons ---------------------------------------------
Where exactly is the additional benefit in having the series name (which is already listed in the title) repeated for every episode?
Wouldn't it be a better idea to complain to the broadcaster and ask why they don't provide episode titles?

The benefit is the nicer look (In my opinion). I think it looks better than a completely empty list. Another possibility is the displaying of the first x characters of the description of the recording. That would have the benefit of the additional information on the content of the recording. Attached are two versions how it could look like :-)
Version 1 takes the first 35 characters of the description of the recording adding a "..." if the description is truncated. Version 2 displays the whole description. With my osd-skin (EgalsTry) the Description then scroles.
This are only proposals :-)
Wouldn't it be a better idea to complain to the broadcaster and ask why they don't provide episode titles?
That is an additional step that should be done anyway :-)

The problem is that the broadcaster which don't send a Subtitle most time send also no Description or evrery Time the same. And so you have noch chance to find the Film by Name, you must look alltimes to the date.
I think the record-osd must enhanced with 2 informations. ---------------------------------- use episode-numer YES used episodenumber start 45 ----------------------------------
I don't know at the moment some-think about basic-string-Operations, while i program in QT. And QT has his own String-Class QString. I hope I do the right. When the recordname is generate and "use episode-numer" is yes then the recordname is generate like this:
const char *cRecording::Title(char Delimiter, bool NewIndicator, int Level,bool useNumber, char[3] Number) const { char buffer[256] = {0}; free(titleBuffer); titleBuffer = NULL; if (Level < 0 || Level == HierarchyLevels()) { struct tm tm_r; struct tm *t = localtime_r(&start, &tm_r); char *s; if (Level > 0 && (s = strrchr(name, '~')) != NULL && useNumber) { s++; if (strlen(s) == 1) { strncpy(buffer, "Episode ") , 8); strncpy(buffer, Number) , 3); s = buffer; } } } else { s = name; asprintf(&titleBuffer, "%02d.%02d.%02d%c%02d:%02d%c%c%s", ......

I always thought it would be an extremely geeky feature if VDR would auto-number episodes somehow, like "Enterprise~4x04 Borderland", "Enterprise~4x05 Cold Station 12" etc., however tracking the 'next number' and formatting it nicely would be quite difficult.

This would be a nice idea for a plugin (script), which could auto-rename episodes by using some database to find the episode-number ... maybe even some additional information to enhance/replace the info.vdr.
