ANNOUNCE: patches for graphlcd-0.1.2-pre5 freetype2 runtime rendering + complete romanian i18n

Hi, I finished reworking my FT2 patches against the latest pre-release of graphlcd. Of course, you must have a freetype-2.1.x library installed, and some TTF fonts if you want to try this. Those who want to try this, please: 1. Download the library patch from http://www.muresan.de/graphlcd/vdr/graphlcd-base-0.1.2-pre5_FT2.diff.bz2 and patch graphlcd-base after running a dos2unix over ./graphlcd-base-0.1.2-pre5/glcddrivers/serdisp.c ./graphlcd-base-0.1.2-pre5/glcddrivers/serdisp.h first. 2. After patching, HAVE_FREETYPE2=1 is already defined in Make.config so there is no need to enable it by yourself. Follow the normal instructions provided in the package to build & install. 3. Download the plugin patch from http://www.muresan.de/graphlcd/vdr/vdr-graphlcd-0.1.2-pre5_FT2.diff.bz2 and patch the original plugin vdr-graphlcd-0.1.2-pre5.tgz 4. Before proceeding with building and installing as you normally would, mkdir ./graphlcd-0.1.2-pre5/graphlcd/fonts/ttf and then make 3 symlinks in that newly created directory (in the source tree of the plugin, then they will be copied upon installing) pointing to actual TTF files on your machine (it could even be the same file if you wish, you will play with the size and the actual symlinks to different fonts later), with these names: ./graphlcd-0.1.2-pre5/graphlcd/fonts/ttf/fLarge.ttf -> /usr/share/fonts/corefonts/trebucbd.ttf ./graphlcd-0.1.2-pre5/graphlcd/fonts/ttf/fNormal.ttf -> /usr/share/fonts/corefonts/trebuc.ttf ./graphlcd-0.1.2-pre5/graphlcd/fonts/ttf/fSmall.ttf -> /usr/share/fonts/corefonts/trebuc.ttf 5. Install & build like you normally would Notes about usage ================= - Start VDR with the graphlcd plugin (you should still see the native fonts on your display at this time if you didn't mess with VDR's setup.conf already), go to it's configuration menu and enable true type fonts, then you have to close and start again (I hope this won't be necessary in future versions, I already took first steps in preparing the cFont class in the library for this). After restarting you will hopefully already see the TTF you've symlinked to on your display. You now may go again to the graphlcd configuration menu and adjust the sizes of the three fonts (theese options appear only when the plugin is started with graphlcd.UseFreeType2Fonts = 1 which is reated after your first run), unfortunately you have to restart every time to see the results of the size modification. You may also manually alter the entries in VDR's setup.conf while VDR is not running, that might be quicker, here are my settings I use with the symlinked fonts above on a 128x64 display (almost perfect results) graphlcd.UseFreeType2Fonts = 1 graphlcd.FreeType2SizeLarge = 11 graphlcd.FreeType2SizeNormal = 10 graphlcd.FreeType2SizeSmall = 9 If you want to revert to the native bitmap fonts, just set UseFreeType2Fonts = 0 in the file or in the configuration menu. - the character encoding is automatically selected according to VDR's OSD language, there is no separate option right now. - I only tested the FT2 stuff on my 128x64 display and it's not perfect even there, so expect strange layouts, but please try it and report. They start fan with 12V/no modulation, to make them rotating for sure, and then slows RPM down with much better way than resistor. Electric motors can and should be guided with pulse width modulation (RC models uses this, try searching "rc electronic speed controller"). So on 12V, 1/12th modulation with 6 units on, fan's electric motor will see it as virtual 6V, but as real drive voltage is 12V, you'll get maximum torque out of your fan. And your fan rotates about half the maximum RPM. This is to make it simple, of course system isn't linear. With 6V your fan doesn't neccessarily rotate, at least not start. Much less noise and heat. Many HDD's can be 'underclocked'. 7200rpm disks can made to perform like 5400rpm one. Check "hdparm -B" for APM support. Check "hdparm -M" for acoustic management support. Also HDD doesn't need to be running all the time, if your VDR is powered 24/7. Check noflushd for this. Works better than plain "hdparm -S".

MSI MS-6215

Looking at the archives I noticed a few people have (or had!) a MSI MS-6215. I'm curious as to whether you have found the performance adequate (I have a 1 GHz PIII) and noise level satisfactory. How can noise be reduced? (I am not very hardwarily inclined) Is it possible somehow to soft-off the machine and wake it up at a pre-determined time with linvdr or another package - the BIOS appears to support. I noticed that a few people have removed their floppy drives. Is this due to heat problems with mounting a HD in the intended position above the CPU? If there is no problem can anyone suggest where I can obtain the HD bracket since I got my barebones machine without one. Has anyone tried making the power supply external to minimise heat? Finally, does anyone have any good ideas to minimise dust entry to the machine other than putting the machine inside a cabinet. Thanks for any help, Andrew

VDR::Plugin::Rotor - question

Hi, this question directed to maintainer of the plugin but anyone having experience welcome to share it. I started to use this plugin with main accent on GotoXY function. This what I was able to acomplish so far: After I messed up with motor motor settings I had to reset it to factory settings. It looks like plugin found "Telstra 5/Intelsat Americas 5" by just choosing the satellite in the plugin and pressing "OK" on Nexus-S remote. Then I can receive FTA program on TV. Then I move dish to other position by controls of the plugin and "Ctrl-C" VDR. On next start VDR will reposition dish to last selected channel and I will get pricture/sound. I very happy that this part works very well. Then of course I would like to check that I can position dish to other satellite and scan for channels. I choose 110.0W or 121.0W and reposition dish. Then I use "Ctrl-C" and switch to "scan" utility to scan transpoders for channels. To my surprise I found very few channels and it looks very suspicios to me. Unfortunately my "Fortec Lifetime Ultra" after last reflash refuses to start (constantly reboots) and I can not confirm that "rotor" plugin has positioned dish correctly. May be number of channels found by "scan" utility has something to do with fact that channels on these satellites are crypted. But I believe that information should be available anyway and scan utility should find them. What was your experience with this plugin and scan utility? Is there reliable source of transpoder list? (SatcoDX/Lygsat - I could not find many channels which was found by "Fortec Lifetime Ultra" in blind search mode when it still worked for me) Config: DVB-S: Nexus-S 2.3 (yes it can move dish and supports USALS through rotor plugin) Plugin: rotor Location: North America/Canada Andy

DXR3, which versions to select?

I know this is FAQ, but unfortunately I cannot find any decent answers. So here we go: Which versions of vdr, em8300, vdr-dxr3 and should I select? I want OSD menus, so CVS version of dxr3 plugin is not sufficient. - I've searched with google - tried reading mailing list archives http://www.linuxtv.org/pipermail/vdr/ - Checked http://www.linuxtv.org/vdrwiki/index.php/Dxr3-plugin - I know http://cachalot.mine.nu/src/dxr3/ but don't know really are those with OSD or not, filenames says 'cvs something' IMHO, http://www.linuxtv.org/vdrwiki/index.php/Dxr3-plugin would be right place to answer this question. -- M. Problem with ABC2 on a dxr3

Hello, I was just wondering if anyone else had noticed a problem with the Australian DVB-T channel ABC2 (which started broadcasts earlier this month). On my dxr3 based system the bottom 3/8 or so of the screen flickers. It seems like it only updates every other frame. The top of the frame appears normal. Has anyone else noticed this? I can post a sample of the ts that causes this if it helps anyone

Dann sollte es gehen. Wie das andere Distributionen handhaben weiss ich nicht, aber das geht sicherlich so ähnlich. Ein kleines Problem gibt es dann noch mit den heruntergeladenen Bildern. Die gehören dann natürlich dem VDR-User. Bei mir gibt es da manchmal Probleme, wenn die Dateien in den User-Homes rumgammlen. Aber das liesse sich nur abstellen, wenn der VDR mehrbenutzerfähig wäre. Can not get video/sound when switch from one transpoder to other

Hi, I've got a problem which I could not resolvet. The problem is that vdr do not tunes to channels on the other transpoder. I would say that it would not tune up at all. To get video I have to use szap "channel" and then I can watch video/audio in vdr from same transpoder only. If I will switch to channel on other transpoder I will get balck screen, if I return to channel on original transpoder it will work for me as long as channels come from same transpoder. Could somebody explain what is going on and how can I fix it? I tried to recompile without plugins the problem is still there. VDR: 1.3.22/1.3.20 CPU: Athlon 1.2GHz DVB-S: Nexus-S Satellite: Telstar 5 (Intelsat Americas (97.0W) Driver: CVS (week and half old) Andy
