Options for deinterlacing (or not)

I want to replace my UK Sky digital box with VDR (I only want the free to air channels) for watching/recording TV over HDMI on my plasma. So far everything is working OK, I have vdr 1.7.3 and xine running on an ASUS M2N VM-HDMI (nvidia) mobo with the s2-liplianin drivers for my Nova SD2 card. My problem is interlacing. I've googled back through the archives and got a lot of info from there, however I still have one question and one request. If X is put into an interlaced mode (1920x1080i @ 50Hz), and I do not do any de interlacing in xine, why is this not the same as what my digibox does? I'm guessing it has something to do with xine outputting a complete frame when the broadcast sends each field? What I'd hope happen (for interlaced material) is that xine receives a field from VDR, scales it to the X resolution (halfed vertically of course) and sends it to the the graphics card which just passes it on to the TV which draws that field. That doesn't seem to happen so where have I gone wrong? There's a lot of options for tvtime in xine, TomsMoComp and full framerate seem popular. What settings are others using? -- Scott

The HVR 1300 is not supported by the pvrinput plugin. Card/driver work in a very different way from ivtv-supported cards, using a second device for the mpeg encoder. It is not sure if pvrinput will ever support this card.

An update, Just saw that my live stream also has a delay in sound. I probably switch channels too fast and didn't notice it before. Will be glad for any solution. Thanks.

Hello all, I'm experiencing some problems with sound when playing media files (movies) using xinelibout 1.0.3, xine-lib 1.2 Sometimes the sound freeze for few seconds and than continue and sometimes goes out of sync with the picture. I don't see it with live broadcast, but happens frequently while playing a video file. Anyone experienced the same? Is there anything can be done to fix it? I saw that xinelibout 1.0.4 is out, but I didn't see anything mentioned about sound in HISTORY file. Thanks.

Pvrinput and HVR1300

Just bought a Hauppauge HVR1300 because of its hw encoder. The idea was to convert all my old vhs tapes to digital format. I thought I would use it in a windows environment but then I thought why not in linux and in VDR. Also I would get one more dvb card in use. I can use it easily as a dvb card with vdr but can not get it working with pvrinput. I've googled around but still no resolution. It would be neat to use vdr to record old tapes and then with burn plugin make dvd's out of them. I have vdr-1.6.0 with xinelibout and pvrinput plugins. If I try to switch to composite "channel" I just get an error stating that the channel is not available. I have tried different values for CARD# in channels.conf with no luck. I've installed vdr and the plugins using synaptic and e-tobi repo. So no compiling except I tried also to get latest v4l2 and dvb-apps which ofcourse had to be compiled :) I can on the other hand use mplayer to watch the signal from composite input. mplayer tv:// -tv input=1 gives me picture in composite w/o encoder mplayer pvr:// gives me an error stating that /dev/video0 is not capable of encoding which of course is the truth mplayer /dev/video1 shows me again the composite picture and now it is using the internal encoder mencoder /dev/video1 -oac copy -ovc copy -of mpeg -o test.mpg records to file as it should All it seems to say in the logs is that the channel is not available. Anu suggestions what to try next or is this doomed to be a failure :( \\Kartsa

More features for Livebuffer

Hi All, I would have a feature-request for the LiveBuffer patch that is available VDR. Sometimes when I'm watching a program from the buffer, i accidentally hit the <up>/<down> button for pausing/resuming the program (or ch+/ch- too). This of course changes the channel, and i loose my buffer... What would be great is a feature that warns me before changing channels while watching from the buffer. A prompt like this would be great: "Do you really want to change channel?" Also a nice thing to have is a way of watching the saved livebuffer-files. Now it get´s saved into /video/LiveBuffer, and vdr does not see this. Maybe it could be saved into a subdirectory like /video/LiveBuffer/2100-01-01.00.01.50.99.rec, then vdr would always have it as the last recording available in the recordings-list... Regards, René

There was a patch I found interesting. In adding channels, the patch allowed vdr to create different lists based on satellite/terrestrial/cable, free/nonfree. It was really usefull for my motorised antenna. All new channels split in different "@" based sections.... Francesco

How to turn a DVD into a regular VDR recording.

My DVD player is not working at the moment, so I want to watch a DVD on my VDR system in the living room. In an earlier message on this list, somebody said that the DVD plugin is not working, so I did not waste any time trying. Also, my VDR PC does not have a DVD ROM anyway. What I did, was: 1) I turned the DVD into a MPEG file using mplayer. Directly from a DVD ROM this can be done using mplayer -dumpstream dvd://1 If the DVD has already been ripped to an ISO image, this can be done using mplayer -dvd-device path_to.iso -dumpstream dvd://1 mplayer creates an MPEG file called "stream.dump". 2) I created a Video directory for the recording: mkdir -p /video/%Name_of_the_movie/2009-03-01.00.00.00.99.rec 3) I used genindex 0.1.3 to split the file into VDR recording files and to create the index: genindex -r -i stream.dump -d /video/%Name_of_the_movie/2009-03-01.00.00.00.99.rec -s 1024 At least for the one DVD I tries so far, this worked fine. I also like the fact that I do not have to insert the DVD disk every time I want to watch the movie. It is nice to have it integrated seamlessly into my recordings. I guess most of this could have been done with the mplayer plugin as well, but AFAIK the mplayer plugin does not allow me to choose audio tracks, it requires a high system load for re-encoding and it reduces the quality during re-encoding. Just wanted to share my experience with the list. Carsten.

I'm trying to write a channel scanner (and later on an EPG scanner) that can handle Freesat nicely, but these non-standard PIDs are a pain. I found another useful DigitalSpy post <http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=971793> which tells you how to find the PIDs. The trouble is this only finds NITs with table_id 0x41 (other network) and SDTs with PID 0x46 (other transport stream). I haven't checked the NITs yet to see whether they're still useful, but the SDTs only contain channels from other transponders, so at best my scanner will have to maintain a lot of data across multiple transponders instead of being able to neatly package each set of channels with its own transponder. Also, all the sections have a section_number of 0 even though they carry different data, so the only way of knowing when you've got a complete set (from the current transponder) is by seeing whether you've already received that data and trust their transmission order hasn't changed. -- TH * http://www.realh.co.uk
