[linux-dvb] Re: streaming DVB-t over a LAN

I've just ordered a DVD-t card (Hauppage Nova-t) from dabs and hope to run it under Debian GNU/Linux although I'm not sure where to start - I've dowloaded the linux drivers but not sure how to watch channels in X.
Try mplayer http://www.mplayerhq.hu/ and dvbstream CVS ( http://www.linuxstb.org/dvbstream/ ).

What I have found to be a problem is finding players that will listen to
boradcasted MPEG2 streams. It seems to stem from the fact there are a lot of
methods to do this (from dvbstream to videolan etc), and each seem to use
different methods of sending the data. So I've yet to come across one that
can both send the data mutlicast, and have a windows player and unix player
access the stream.
MPlayer ( http://www.mplayerhq.hu/ ) is pretty good in dealing with rtp or http MPEG2 streams on both Unix and Windows (cygwin).

A windows compile of mplay is included in VDR Streamingcontrol http://streamingcontrol.p10info.de/. Although VDR itself won't run with a primary card the mplayer can be used to receive a rtp steam from dvbstream ( http://www.linuxstb.org/dvbstream/index.shtml use CVS wih current drivers).

Another windows solution is the Elecard decoder which can also display an rtp stream ( www.elecard.com ) in WMP. Another program using Elecard is DVBVideoLAN ( http://dvbvideolan.mine.nu/ )

The only "problem" with mplayer is the deinterlacing filters don't work too well (at least not with the windows compile) and there are programmes that are sent interlaced, which look a bit rubbish on a CRT / LCD monitor. Elecard's deinterlace is pretty good, but obviously eats quite some CPU.

I guess interlacing is why a primary decoder card like a DVB-s rev 1.6 / rev 2.1 is unbeatable for overlay :) I haven't actually tried overlay in X - only TV out - but the full featured TechnoTrend / Siemens cards are supposed to be good on that unlike a dxr3.

There's also some project trying to combine vdr with Xine a software player for X - but it seems to be at very early stages:
