hi,
i had tried many times to install vdr with no luck, but i found a
tutorial on how to install vdr 1.7.0 on ubuntu-like systems, from source
code. It was pretty straight forward, i didn't have any problem on
compiling and installing everything.
I've got a lifeview trio pci card, saa7134, and ubuntu detected the card
and loaded itself the modules saa7134, saa7134_alsa and saa7134_dvb. It
works great with kaffeine, "out of the box"
However, i need your help trying to make vdr get to the …
[View More]card.
This tutorial says that i must install multiproto drivers.
So, i downloaded them and compiled vdr on that. I didn't run "make
install" on the multiproto path. Should i use the multiproto drivers
instead of the ones that come with the kernel? As far as i understand
the tutorial said it was necessary for compiling, but not for running
vdr. Correct me if i'm wrong.
So... everything is compiled without any problem and i run vdr like this:
*********
/usr/bin/vdr -c /etc/vdr -E /var/vdr -l 3 -P'xineliboutput -l none -r
37890 -p' -u root
*********
on the other hand.... if i run "scan", i can find all the possible
channels i get from the satellite.
I did this to get the "channels.conf" for vdr:
*********
scan -o vdr /home/servidor/.kde/share/apps/kaffeine/dvb-s/Astra-19.2E >>
channels.conf
*********
which gave some results and then i put this file into the /etc/vdr path.
If then i look into the logs, i see this:

so... to me this means that can't get to the card. is this right? I
can't tune "channel 1". Actually it can't open any channel. I'm trying
only with FTA channels, so... there shouldn't be any problem with that.
if i run:
********
vdr-sxfe --video=xv --aspect=16:9 --fullscreen --width=1280 --height=720
--nokbd --post=tvtime:method=Linear,cheap_mode=1,pulldown=0,
use_progressive_frame_flag=1
********
vdr-sxfe starts without any error reported, but then it says, again, "no
signal"
what am i doing wrong?
I would appreciate any light you could through on this. Should i go back
to 1.6? I haven't tried any other version, actually. When i came to
linux, kaffeine was already installed and working without effort. The
first attempt with other software has been this vdr 1.7.0.
Thanks.

Hi Klaus,
What is the motivation behind the logic of not allowing duplicate channels
in channels.conf file?
I've tried to mimic channels settings of my Topfield receiver where I have
favorite channels divided in
different groups, while I can still access any channel on any satellite.
I've intended to have it that way:
:News
:Sport
:Kids
:Radio
:@10000 All
:Sat1
:Sat2
:Sat3
Where SatX group has all the channels of that satellite and
News,Sport,Kids,Radio groups will
act as favorite channels …
[View More]groups having the same channels as in SatX groups.
I had to change some functions in channels.c to update all duplicate
channels when an update should
be done.
If anyone is interested I'll post it here.

Hi all,
Another question to bother you...
How long does it takes to switch a FTA channel on your system? In my case
DVB-S.
I wonder if this timing sounds ok to you (I think its kind of slow):
1.7.1 + ext64-livebuffer + xinelibout
2 channels on the same transponder - about 2 seconds - video and sound
playing right after the switch.
2 channels on different transponders - about 4 seconds - sound is playing
right after the switch, image is shown, but start moving about 1 more second
later.
…
[View More]Please let me know what is your status on that (including version you're
using).
Thanks.

Linux "helpfully" treats certain keypresses on my DVB remote (an input
device) as keyboard keystrokes, eg the number keys, arrow keys and OK =
Enter, so with VDR configured to respond to the input device it thinks
I've pressed these keys twice.
I've added --no-kbd to my vdr command line options and --nokbd to
vdr-sxfe, but one or both of these is ignoring the option. I think it's
vdr-sxfe because --nokbd has no effect on my remote client either. Well,
it does say "Keyboard input disabled" but …
[View More]it still responds to the
keyboard as normal.

Hello!
projects.vdr-developer.org is a place for community maintained VDR
projects. The idea for this was born out of a survey conducted among VDR
users, where it turned out, that even some VDR plug-ins that haven't been
updated for years are still very popular.
The main goal for this is, to be a community effort to continue the
development of such orphaned VDR plug-ins and give them a new home.
I started with releasing a the new version 0.6.0 of the OSDTeletext
plug-in, which now supports …
[View More]the recent VDR version.
But projects.vdr-developer.org is open to EVERYONE. It offers a Wiki, file
downloads, a documents section, an issue tracker, a news tracker and a GIT
repository for each project (via Redmine).

Hello everybody,
Here I want to share my personal experience with vdr and streamdevice
plugin.
So, the main task was the following: to stream encoded vdr-stream from
my vdr through internet (not in local net!) to the client machine (to my
friend). For encoding you need to have a good machine, at least 3000Mgz.
I used E2160 Dual Core Intel processor and Abit I-N73HD motherboard. To
stream into internet you need to have also good upload speed, at least
500-700 kb/s. Below you can find vdr …
[View More]configuration files for
streamdevice-plugin:
file /etc/vdr/plugins/plugin.streamdev-server.conf has only one line:
--remux=/var/lib/vdr/tools/externremux.sh
and executable file /var/lib/vdr/tools/externremux.sh :
#!/bin/bash
IN=-
OUT=/tmp/out
rm -f $OUT.avi /tmp/$OUT.log
killall -9 cat
mkfifo $OUT.avi
cat $OUT.avi & /usr/bin/mencoder "$IN" -ovc x264 -x264encopts
bitrate=512:subq=5:8x8dct:frameref=2:bframes=3:b_pyramid:weight_b:threads=auto
-oac lavc -lavcopts acodec=aac:abitrate=20 -o $OUT.avi &>$OUT.log
rm -f $OUT.avi /tmp/$OUT.log
killall -9 cat
Now what about client? We experimented a lot, my friend even wrote a
standalone program for that, but finally he found that xbmc version from
svn, patched by external-player patch
http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=40136
and with vdr plugin
http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=36988
is all he needed to watch stream from my vdr.
He also use wakeonlan to boot my vdr machine. Taking into account 6
hours difference in time between our countries he doesn't bother me.
TODO It is a good idea to implement possibility to use external player
(mplayer for example) in stream-device client. Then you can watch
encoded stream on the vdr. For a present moment you can only watch mpeg2
stream and only in local network.

Hi,
thanks to Tobi's help, there are now updated binary packages for Ubuntu
Intrepid available. Have fun:
http://www.hanno.de/blog/category/vdr/
Regards,
Hanno
Hi,
since upgrading to the most recent Ubuntu release 8.10 (Intrepid), my FF
card is having problems. It is async with audio, both for some live TV
channels and some recordings. It is also skipping while watching live
TV. (This is not a full diagnosis, but the skipping appears to be
limited to encrypted channels.) [1]
vdr didn't show this behaviour with the previous setup (based on Hardy
with default Ubuntu kernel).
However, the logs show nothing. Nothing at all.
So how can I debug this if …
[View More]the system thinks that everything is fine?
Thanks,
Hanno
Here's the setup:
Athlon X2 CPU
vdr 1.6.0-2 e-tobi binary for Ubuntu [2]
(e-tobi version number: 1.6.0-8)
Budget DVB-C card used as input,
with CAM and Kabel Deutschland smartcard,
using the driver that comes with Ubuntu's default 2.6.27 kernel
FF DVB-C card without CAM, used as input and output,
using the ttpci driver that comes with Ubuntu's default 2.6.27 kernel
plus the modified firmware from [3]
