Reducing video quality

Dear list, I was wondering is there an option for reducing the video quality during recording, for example records only every second scanline (or whats the mpeg equivalent)? Seems a 250GB space for recordings is not nearly enough and an automatic quality reduction would be nice in case HDD capacity nears end ;) BR, Jarmo

Best .vdr editing/recoding method (is avidemux2 ok?)

Hi, I recorded many world cup matches with vdr and I'm thinking about storing them on DVDs (as data files). I want to do minor editing (such as cutting ads) and resave the stream into mpeg files, without reencoding the original bitstream; this can be done easily with avidemux2 (saving MPEG PS A+V). My questions are: - should I expect any subtle problems in doing that? (such as A/V desync) - is there a more recommended method to perform this activity? (it looks like there are a lot of demultiplexing/multiplexing tools and scripts around) What I would like to avoid is damaging the information in the files in some not evident way and realize the problem only in the future, when the original files have been deleted. Please let me add a not so in-topic part: is there anyone with a vdr recording of the world cup final match from ARD? I'm missing a few minutes and it would be nice to have someone let me "patch" the hole. I hope the fact that I'm from Italy and my world-cup related request for help is directed mostly to German persons doesn't play against me ;-) Thank you. sc plugin weird error!

Hi All, I've patched vdr-1.4.0 with vdr-sc-0.5.9 patches. I first did the ffdecsa patch and then sc patch. then I compiled vdr plugins and everything went smoothly. But when now I'm trying to launch vdr with ./vdr -P sc I'm getting this message: vdr: ./PLUGINS/lib/libvdr-sc.so.1.4.0: undefined symbol: _ZN7cDevice10SetCaDescrEP8ca_descr What is the problem. John

Hello, I've done an updated patch for UTF-8 support in VDRAdmin-AM. The "make.sh" script now can generate utf8-versions of all existing locales, just issue "make.sh utf8add", and then compile all locales with "make.sh po". Then, you can configure a utf8-locale if it's supported on your system. Have phun, Lucian P.S. The other patch is for the current gentoo ebuild, for those gentoo-ers who can't wait until hd_brummy provides a new one.

PID filter issue with Wideview DVB-T USB

VDR experts (Klaus), I'm experiencing similar problems as e.g. reported in [1] with a Wideview-based DVB-T USB stick (Prolink Pixelview PlayTV 505 DVB-T) and VDR. While the adapter works well with kaffeine, VDR reports a "can't open filter handle" error when switching channels *within* a bouquet. On the other hand, tuning to a channel on a *different* bouquet works (see below). This was tested with a vanilla 2.6.17.4 kernel and VDR 1.4.1-1ctvdr2 from e-tobi. As I understand from [2], the problem is related to the hardware PID filter of the adapter, which can't be disabled. Is it possible to find a fix or workaround for VDR so that it works with this type of adapter? I'd be glad if someone with a deeper understanding of VDR could shed some light on this issue, and I'd be happy to run any tests. Regards. Hi Stefan, I tried several of your suggestions with little luck. You can see the results here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/16371732@N00 The pictures: "softdevice_wrongoverlay1_software", and "softdevice_wrongoverlay_software" show the OSD problem with software mode rendering, no changes to any softdevice sourcefiles. The main problem is the OSD (in software mode) has banding across it, as if every 4 or 5 lines are not drawn. This occurs no matter what the color space setting is or swapping the U & V components. Using xineliboutput the OSD appears without banding, as can be seen in the second picture with the DVD progress bar. Using the "hardware" setting the OSD appears correctly but "blinks" momentarily when there is video (it is not visible when video is playing). rotor plugin and USALs

Does the Rotor plugin support USALS? I read somewere that it did but so far I can't get it to go to a sat location. I tried entering my lat/lon in the setup.conf. I noticed that then in the on screen setup (which you can't change) it devides the numbers provided by 10, ie lat 32.2127 becomes 3.2 and lon 10.8829 becomes 11.0. I tried pre-multiplying by 10 which didnt work. It did move once by selecting a sat location and pressing the green button for goto when I told it not to use the diesqc.conf, but it seemed to go to the wrong location. Also, I need to be able to use the diesqc.conf because I am using an Invacom Quad with CP/LP LNBF and I need to be able to tell it which to use. In trying to just get the sat moved to set angles, I tried a command line rotor program on the DVBN forums, but it is very hit and miss that it even responds. Seems to be more likly if I run nscan first set to use a stacked lnb. I think maybe the program dosn't properly turn of the 22khz tone for the required time before sending the commands. When it does move, it always seems off. Dosn't seem to use my lat/lon correctly. There is a option to send to 0 and I can replace that string with data that will send it West of South 0. So I was able to align the dish by sending it to sat 119 which is 9 degrees west for me, But I can't seem to work out the data bytes to make it go east of south 0. I have the pdf on the commands, but nothing I tried worked.

VDRAdmin-AM-3.4.6 en_US.utf8 locale patch

Hello, for those interested in displaying EPG content in UTF-8, but don't care about a localization of VDRAdmin, you might be interested in this patch. It will add a script which will generate an en_US.utf8 locale PO-file right from the POT file (will thus always be up to date), and also add "en_US.utf8" to the LANG variable in the make.sh and install.sh scripts. All you have to do after generating the "new" locale is to run "make.sh po" before installing, that way the new locale will also be compiled (assumes gettext installed on the system, which shouldn't be a problem). Then you can configure the en_US.utf8 locale at least from VDRAdmin's Configuration page, if you don't want to set it globally for your system. If you want to use a similar technique for a localized VDRAdmin-AM, you can convert the respective PO-file to UTF-8, let the "ISO-8859-1" msgid (one of the first messages) map to "UTF-8" and add the new locale to the build system.
