arguments to mesg command

I am not been able to find any information about this. Is it possible to describe the time a mesg message should stay on screen ? Even better would be a switch that makes the message on screen until a key is pressed. Any soulutions ? Thomas

MP3/MPlayer plugin 0.9.11 (development)

Hi, a new release of the MP3/MPlayer plugin is available from my homepage. questions about FF card demuxing, and the ECD chip...

I have a few questions regarding how FF cards acheive correct A/V sync during live tv. I know there have been discussions about this in the past, but it seems they never ended up going anywhere... Please excuse my ignorance with any or all of this... It appears that under certain circumstances [NTSC content? or perhaps provider specific?], there is an A/V SYNC problem with playback [not live tv] of a decrypted stream [using my CI module, utilizing the CAM interface layer]...all FTA channels have perfect A/V SYNC. This ONLY happens on FULL FEATURED cards, like my NEXUS-S. With my NOVA-S, I do not experience the same problems. After some investigation, I have found that the SOFTWARE front ends keep A/V sync by using the AUDIO PTS as the master, and adjusting the VIDEO FRAMERATE to keep sync. The only possibility I can think of is that perhaps during the decryption process, the framerate of the video stream becomes variable...thus requiring SYNC to be kept by the method mentioned above [adjusting framerate based on AUDIO PTS]. Since FF cards use their own muxer, I was thinking perhaps this muxer uses some OTHER method to keep sync... The only way THAT could be possible is if the ECD chip is passing information along to the muxer, which doesn't happen at all when playing back a recorded stream....since you've already recorded the incorrect framerate, and there is no ECD activity during playback [since decryption was already acheived during initial recording] Questions: 1. What method does the FF muxer use to ensure proper A/V SYNC? 2. Can the FF muxer be modified at all? Perhaps, through patching the firmware? 3. Is this a valid assumption: The ECD chip provides SYNC info to the muxer for decrypted streams during LIVE TV I know that my questions are based on a series of assumptions that could possibly be completely incorrect, so I apologize if that is the case. But I see a plot. First you sell all the people SD digital stuff, then sell them HD stuff. That keeps the commerce going.. :-) My current way of thinking is that if legacy formats are upsampled to HDTV resolution, HDTV channel still looks crappy on upsampled stuff, and probably won't do much more harm doing also the framerate conversion. And us Europeans are very used to this because of NTSC->PAL conversion. Also many broadcasters have SDTV co-channel for HDTV channel, so you can watch TV also via SDTV-side. This is the Australian model, have 2 streams per channel, one HDTV and one SDTV. About stations filling channel with HD-material. Every movie is HD. In 2005 every US serie is most likely filmed with HD. And if european broadcasting/production companies would purchase HD cameras/production stuff today, then all material would be HD (news, documentaries, homeland series, commercials etc). And who needs re-runs on HD channel. Keep the SD channel for those. HDTV tuners can also tune to SDTV. Of course in my dreamworld HDTV channel should change framerate per show. Movies with 1080p/24fps, EU legacy series/stuff with 50fps and US series with 24/60fps. And that would also enable VDR to do 'easy' noad. If framefrate changes from 24fps to 50/60fps we have commercials.. :-) Or do you think that year 2020 DVB/576i is still alive? I hope that in Finland 2007 by dropping analogue TV-channels there will HD channels. Not 100 channels more of "reality-tv" with SDTV. VCR's are dying, most retail stores report that consumers don't purchase them anymore (at Finland at least). And has been VCR sold for about 25 years (1980-2004). Best regards, Jori

Building latest DVB driver on 2.6

I asked on the dvb list, but no one responded... Anyway, when I upgraded to 1.3.X I built a new machine and used the 2.6 kernel. After quite a few problems with the kernel drivers (like none of the DVB-t drivers being there) I settled on using the CVS driver and used the build-2.6/makefile. I'm having problems with software RAID and am trying to move to a newer 2.6, so I went and got the current (obviously) CVS driver and did the make, but there are no alps_tdlb7 or grundig_401 drivers there, no .o, no sources, nothing. What am I missing, obviously I'm not the only alps_tdlb7 user out there!

I think Faroudja chips are not so good. At least my Philips LCD TV has such chip, and everytime text is scrolling Faroudja's autosensing goes wrong, and on scrolling text I get bad combing and also picture judders a couple of times when format changes. Luckily on my projector I can control deinterlacing by turning off "film" mode deinterlace (so just use video deinterlace), so video material from VDR always runs smoothly. My LCD doesn't allow this. I see that this is problem of my TV, but if Faroudja was good it would not do this. HTPC also can read MPEG streams flags to aid deinterlacing/inverse telecine, and Faroudja's don't have that stuff because they are behind video line on TVs/projectors. Best regards, Jori

If someone has this episode I would be glad if I could download it or if the person in question could burn it on CD/DVD and send it over to me (of course I would pay him the money for the medium and postal stuff). Hello, After RTFM I can't understand how to read a stream using VDR -> VDR client on a different machine. I have installed VDR and vdr-xine on the client machine but how do I run VDR on a machine with no DVB card? Do I have to modprobe the DVB modules? What do I do to attach the VDR streamdev client to the stream? Both xine and VLC can attach but I want the VDR menus EPG etc on my client. This isn't very clear in the docs sorry. Cheers Tony Grant

vdr-xine and overscan area

Hi! I'm using xine plugin here with a desktop (over network, actually). But there is one rather irritating problem: There are (at least on Finnish channels) usually different kinds of color borders, distortions etc. in the edges (the area that gets overscanned in televisions). Is there a way to cut the overscan area from the video? If not, I (and many xine users in Finland, I believe) would greatly appreciate such a feature in the postprocess plugin. -- Anssi Hannula

Tv-Out on an Nvidia card

Hi all, I currently have my system configured where I have my X11 configured with 2 output devices, 0.0 and 0.1. :0.1 is set up with my TV-Out on my Nvidia card. I'm using Xine with vdr because I have a budget card. I set my display to :0.1 and then run Xine in full screen mode and away it goes. My question is, is this the best way of configuring my system?
