Capabilities

Hello, I've problems with my statusleds plugin. If vdr is not running as root all capabilities are dropped - except the one for setting the system time. My plugin wants to set the keyboard leds with the ioctl KDSETLED on /dev/console. Unfortunately this ioctl requires one more capability. Is there any way to get this capability? Should we extend the plugin interface with a possibility for the plugins to specify needed caps? Greetings, Bernd

Strange delay in recordings with vdr-xine

I recently (more on that below) started experiencing a strange problem with vdr 1.4.5-1 and vdr-xine 0.7.6+network patches: while replaying a recording (either against a local copy of vdr or over the network) the only command that acts immediately is pause, every other one (skip one minute, ff, rew, stop) takes effect after a delay of 5-6 seconds, so, e.g., if I go back to the recordings menu, playback will still go on for 5-6 seconds. This wouldn't be such a big problem if it wasn't for teletext subtitles, since they appear 5-6 seconds earlier (i.e. the osd is instantaneous while the replay is lagging 5 seconds). The strange thing is that this didn't happen before, the only change is the laptop (but with the same hard disk: 3 months ago my laptop broke, I was given a similar one in which installed the old hard disk. Meanwhile I upgraded the kernel to 2.6.17, using the replacement laptop, with no problems, until now, when I got my repaired laptop back and this problem appeared). The main difference between the 2 laptops is the video card: the current one has a mobility/radeon 9000 and 1400x1050 resolution, while the replacement one had an intel chipset, 1024x768. I upgraded vdr while using the replacement laptop, but I'm pretty sure I maintained the same version of vdr-xine all the time. Bye -- Luca

Possible bug with recording...

I was watching something via the mplayer plugin. A recording timer was triggered which aborted the mplayer playback. Is this behavior intentional? If so, can the abort be disabled while still allowing the timer to function properly? I know there's always the option of not watching anything else during a timer/recording event but I would suggest that defeats one of the main purposes of a recording in the first place, ...a means to allow you to watch a show at your own convenience. In this case it was not convenient to abort what I had already watching and was right in the middle of. Thanks for your input fellas.

how to setup VDR with my hardware ?

In the last 3 years I have cumulated some different hardware gizmo and it is my goal to put them in production now.... but I'd like to hear from more expert people if feasible or not. My VDR server is a 200mhz IBM netstation, with a Nexus DVB-S and a dvb-t card. netstation has been modified to host a notebook harddisk. it has a 100mbit lan. It is located in my "computer room" and connected to the kitchen tv via a CVBS (for viewing) and VGA (for configuring) My other equipment is: - Hauppauge MVP (unused) - dlink 320 (dvd/divs player with lan connection using uPNP protocol) in living room - a couple of other PC Now I'd like to: a) start using the MVP to connect to television in bedroom: I think that VOMPserver should be used b) start using the dlink 320.... just for replay if realtime tv not possible.... I don't think there is an hook to vdr for uPNP servers... I may configure the server to "export" the VDR directory structure... c) stream the live tv or replays to the notebook or the PC I usually use... what plugins/patches/setup/programs should I use on the VDR server and on the Windows or Linux (dual boot) PC ? A link to documentation is of course ok. Thank you, Francesco PS: I know that a 200mhz server is nowadays wery outdated.... but it's chipset is a genuine intel and it is able to succesfully record up to 3 streams concurrently (but VDR responsiveness is really bad...). Other PC I may use have poor quality chipsets that can't handle that load, have AMD processors that need HUGE and noisy heatsink.....

VDR user input slowness

Hi, Why is the user input so slow? When I press a key in remote, there seems to be a random delay of 0-0.5sec or so.. Sometimes it's fast, sometimes not. It's fine in channel switching but really annoying when you a trying to input filenames or something. I have been using VDR for two years and the problem has always been there. However I just made another VDR box, that doesn't have any DVB cards. It just streams data from the bigger box, with streamdev. Remote control is really fast and snappy here, no lag at all! So is it the DVB handling that slows vdr down? Perhaps some priority issue that could be adjusted? Both boxes use dxr3-plugin as output device, and pretty much identical software setup (copied over from box1 to box2).. VDR version is 1.4.5. -- Teemu Suikki http://www.z-power.fi

Ideal conditions for VDR

What are the ideal conditions under which to run VDR? For example: Nice level? Nice level relative to other apps, daemons and stuff running at the same time? Pre-emptive kernel? Kernel timer 250Hz? 1000Hz? Quantity of system memory? Processor speed? Frequency scaling? I am running VDR with Vompserver for the front end. --------------------------------- All New Yahoo! UK Freeview Logical Channel Numbers

Is there a way to give inode entries a higher cache priority than data in the linux kernel?

I have a distributed VDR system in my house with a lot of disks that are NFS mounted by VDR PCs in two rooms. In order to conserve energy, I have used hdparm to set a spin down delay after which the disks turn themselves off. When /video/.update is touched (one of the VDR PCs creates/deletes/ edits a recording, I move a recording into a folder, etc.) or when the vdr program is started, it reads all directories from all disks. Most of these directories are unchanged, so there really is no need to spin up the disk just to read a few inode entries. However, my observation is that they are always spun up. So my questions are: 1) Is there a bug in the linux kernel that makes it spin up the disk needlessly even if the data are still in the cache? 2) Is there a way to configure the kernel, so the inode entries are locked in the cache or at least get a much higher cache priority than ordinary data? streamdev hang after short burst noise.

Hi all, I've a vdr box that i use with streamdev plugin. I watch this streams over my windows computer with vlc. But now, there is some random noise that appears in my input signal, causes to streamdev to fail completely. the noise time is so short that vdr works and does not restart, but I should restart it to restart streamdev server. Any clue or solution for this problem. With the best wishes. J. Anderson.
